What Is a GPA Calculator?
A GPA (Grade Point Average) calculator is a tool that computes your weighted academic performance score based on your grades and the credit hours (or units) assigned to each subject. Instead of looking at raw marks alone, GPA reflects how well you performed relative to the weight of each course — so a 3-credit-hour course carries more influence than a 1-credit-hour elective.
Our multi-country GPA calculator goes one step further: it lets you select your country and automatically applies the correct grading scale, so students in India, the UK, Germany, or Pakistan get accurate results without converting grades manually. Whether you are a high school student, an undergraduate, or a postgraduate applicant preparing for study abroad, this tool gives you the precise GPA figure admissions offices and employers actually use.
How GPA Is Calculated (Universal Formula)
Regardless of country, the weighted GPA formula is the same:
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours)
What changes between countries is how letter grades or percentage marks are converted into grade points. For example, an "A" in the USA maps to 4.0 points, while an "O" (Outstanding) in India maps to 10 points on the UGC scale, and "Sehr Gut" in Germany maps to 1.0 on an inverted scale. Our calculator handles all these conversions automatically once you select your country.
GPA Systems Around the World — Explained
United States — 4.0 Scale
The USA uses the most internationally recognised GPA scale, ranging from 0.0 to 4.0. Most universities use a letter-grade-to-point mapping: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on. A GPA of 3.5 or above is generally considered Dean's List level. A GPA of 3.7–4.0 is typically required for top graduate school admissions.
United Kingdom — Degree Classification / Honours System
The UK does not traditionally use a numeric GPA. Instead, final degrees are awarded as First Class Honours (70%+), Upper Second Class (2:1, 60–69%), Lower Second Class (2:2, 50–59%), Third Class (40–49%), or Ordinary/Fail (below 40%). Our calculator converts UK percentage scores into a 4.0-equivalent GPA for international comparison and study abroad applications.
India — 10-Point CGPA (UGC/CBCS)
India's University Grants Commission (UGC) mandated a 10-point Grading Scale under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Grades range from O (Outstanding, 10 points) down to F (Fail, 0 points). Many universities also still use percentage marks, but the CGPA system is now the national standard. A CGPA of 8.5+ is generally considered equivalent to a first-class distinction.
Canada — 4.0 or 4.3 Scale
Canada mostly follows the US 4.0 scale, but several universities (including the University of Toronto and McGill) use a 4.3 scale where A+ = 4.3. Our calculator uses the standard 4.0 Canadian scale for broad compatibility. A GPA of 3.5+ is generally required for graduate school admission in Canada.
Australia — 7-Point GPA Scale
Australian universities use a 7-point GPA scale. High Distinction (HD) = 7, Distinction (D) = 6, Credit (C) = 5, Pass (P) = 4, and Fail (F) = 0. Some universities use a slightly different mapping, but this is the most widely adopted scale. A GPA of 5.0+ (Credit average) is often required for postgraduate entry.
Germany — Inverted 1–5 Scale
Germany's grading system is inverted — 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 is the minimum passing grade. Sehr Gut (Very Good) = 1.0–1.5, Gut (Good) = 1.6–2.5, Befriedigend (Satisfactory) = 2.6–3.5, Ausreichend (Sufficient) = 3.6–4.0, and Nicht Bestanden (Fail) = 5.0. This inverse logic confuses many international students, so our calculator clearly maps German grades to a GPA equivalent.
France — 20-Point Scale
France uses a 0–20 scale. A score of 16–20 is considered "Très Bien" (Very Good), 14–15.9 is "Bien" (Good), 12–13.9 is "Assez Bien" (Fairly Good), 10–11.9 is a Pass, and below 10 is a Fail. The average French student scores between 11–13, making scores above 14 genuinely excellent. Our calculator converts French marks into a normalised GPA.
Pakistan — 4.0 Scale (HEC)
Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC) mandates the 4.0 GPA scale for all universities. The mapping is very similar to the US system: A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.5, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. A CGPA of 3.0 or above is typically required for merit scholarships and foreign study programmes.
China — 4.0 / 5.0 Hybrid Scale
China uses a hybrid system. Many universities run a 5-point scale (Excellent = 5, Good = 4, Average = 3, Pass = 2, Fail = 1) while others have adopted the international 4.0 scale or use percentage marks. Our calculator uses the most widely-reported 4.0 equivalent for Chinese university grades.
New Zealand — 9-Point GPA Scale
New Zealand universities use a 9-point GPA scale. A+ = 9, A = 8, A− = 7, B+ = 6, B = 5, B− = 4, C+ = 3, C = 2, D = 1, and F = 0. A GPA of 7 or above (A− average) is generally required for honours programme entry and most graduate scholarships.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the USA GPA system work?
The USA uses a 4.0 GPA scale. Letter grades are converted to grade points: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on. GPA is calculated as the sum of (grade points × credit hours) divided by total credit hours. A 4.0 is a perfect GPA.
How is GPA calculated in India?
India's UGC/CBCS system uses a 10-point scale. O (Outstanding) = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4, F = 0. GPA is the weighted average of grade points. A CGPA of 8.5 or above is considered equivalent to a first-class degree.
What does the UK Honours system mean as a GPA?
The UK does not use a standard GPA number. Instead, degrees are classified as First Class (70%+), Upper Second 2:1 (60–69%), Lower Second 2:2 (50–59%), Third (40–49%), or Fail (below 40%). Our calculator converts these percentages into a 4.0-equivalent GPA for international comparison.
Why is Germany's GPA inverted?
Germany traditionally grades on a 1–5 scale where 1.0 is the highest ("Sehr Gut" / Very Good) and 4.0 is the minimum passing grade ("Ausreichend" / Sufficient). A grade of 5 means a fail. This is the opposite of most other systems, so lower German grade numbers = better performance.
Can I convert my GPA between countries?
Yes — use our calculator for your home country GPA, then note the numeric result. Most study abroad applications accept a 4.0-equivalent GPA regardless of country, which our tool provides alongside the native scale result.
Is there a limit on the number of subjects I can enter?
No limit. Use the "+ Add Subject" button to add as many subjects as your semester contains. You can also remove any row individually.
Does this tool store or share my grades?
No. All processing happens entirely within your browser. Nothing is saved, transmitted, or tracked. Your academic data stays completely private.
What credit hours should I enter?
Enter the credit hours (or units) exactly as listed in your course syllabus or academic transcript. These are usually whole numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) but the calculator also accepts decimals.
